First Church of Christ Scientist - Jefferson City

In 1886, upon the solicitation of several invalids and other interested parties who desired Christian Science treatment, Mrs. T.R. Weeks of Kansas City, MO visited Jefferson City and practiced the Christian Science healing art. She continued here several months and healed several well known and prominent persons who then took an active part in Christian Science work.

After her departure a number who had been healed began the study of Christian Science, holding neighborhood meetings for that purpose. In the spring of 1891 a public meeting place was secured in the old Tennessee House where they continued their meetings until they removed to the Odd Fellows’ Hall, in the City Hall Building, and from there to the Christian Church on Main Street. Later the congregation met in the Jewish Synagogue on Monroe Street.

On March 26, 1896, the following persons met at the home of Mrs. Sallie A. Noland: N.T. Richardson, Mrs. M.S. Richardson, Master Elwood Richardson, Mrs. Sallie A. Noland, Mrs. Sarah Winston, Mrs. Kate M. Henry, Charles B. Maus, H.F. Sarman, W.W. Davis, Mrs. C.E. Davis, Miss Lottie Davis, Mrs. Gillfillian, Charles Opel and Mrs. Myrtle C. Opel, who agreed that a Church of Christ Scientist be organized and incorporated under the laws of Missouri, which act was duly consummated on March 30, 1897.

Mrs. Mattie S. Richardson, C.S. of Chicago, Ill. was the first President who was later succeeded by Mrs. Kate M. Henry of Jefferson City, MO. Instead of a regular or ordained minister, the Christian Science Church has two readers, reading alternatively selections from the Bible and correlative passages from “Science and Health,” with key to the Scriptures by Mary B.G. Eddy, which comprised the sermons. Silent prayer followed by the audible repetition of the Lord’s Prayer, with its spiritual interpretation, with hymns, constituted the services.

Officers in 1900 were Mrs. Kate M. Henry, President; Stuart C. Davis and Mrs. Myrtle C. Opel, Readers; H.F. Sarman, Clerk; Charles Opel, Treasurer; Board of Directors, Charles B. Maus, Mrs. C.E. Davis, Mrs. Myrtle C. Opel, Mrs. Mamie Bartlett, Charles Bartlett and H.F. Sarman. Captain C.B. Maus donated a lot on the northeast corner of Atchison and Madison streets on which a church building was erected. The organization presently maintains a reading room at 310 Jefferson Street.
